Outrageous Fashion and Mega-Stars at the Paris Couture

01/24/2007 at 12:00 PM ET

These days, any custom-made gown is called “couture”, but true haute couture is produced by a few select members of the Chambre de Commerce et d’Industrie de Paris, who keep alive the traditions of custom-fitting and hand-sewing every piece. When the incredibly detailed and expensive designs are unveiled to some of the wealthiest and most famous women in the world, the result is more about spectacle than wearability. The stars have been turning out for the Spring 07 shows happening this week in Paris, starting with Monday’s geisha-themed Christian Dior show, where the impeccable Dita Von Teese and Diane Kruger perched in the front row. On to the Valentino show, where Dita reappeared and the Italian couturier sent out an all-white homage to his one-time client Jackie O. Victoria Beckham caused a paparazzi frenzy at the Chanel show, where she was joined by a diverse group from starlets Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger (again) to a pink-tressed Rachel McAdams and Sigourney Weaver. Later that night, Posh continued on to the Jean Paul Gaultier show, where Dita Von Teese walked the runway as a modern Mary Magdalene.

the dress on the right is stunning. it’s art! the shows would be much more interesting to see than what ‘star’ is sitting in the front row.

Wow, it’s beautiful, it’s stunning, and I wish I could wear something like it to an art opening in N.Y.C.!!!!

I just wanted to state that Katie Holmes is 27. Why is she wearing a dress that an old women would were. No fashion sense! Dress your age and have fun.

That RED dress looks amazing, obviously not for any person to actually wear, but it almost looks light as air. I’m sure it’s quite heavy though. It kind of makes me think of ringlet curls in someone’s hair. VERY COOL!

There outfits are not for going out puposes but I agree that the show would be really interesting to see

I’m sure it was a great show, but I’m not going to say something is nice, if I don’t really believe so. If it
was for a play that’s fine, but to actually wear around like a hot number, not my thing.

Dita Von Teese is SO gorgeous! Glad to see her rid of Marilyn Manson….he distracted from her beauty! She’s never looked better!

I wonder why Katie Cruise’s baby needs to be without her mother- just so she can get a close-up look at costumes? She’s an actress for crying-out-loud, she’s seen costumes as a part of a job~ seems she just got a better paying gig.

Beautiful show. Beautiful dresses. This was all about art. Having it customed to be wearable, i think theyw ould look stunning. Galliano is the best at it
