Tips from Katharine McPhee's Glam Squad

12/28/2006 at 01:30 PM ET

If you’ve seen our exclusive Video Diary of Katharine McPhee getting ready for the Billboard Awards, you know she got some help getting red-carpet ready from her hairstylist Campbell and her makeup artist Jake Bailey. They let us in on a few tricks they used on Katharine that night, like Jake’s no-smudge mascara trick of putting cardboard right under the lashes while applying.

To get Katharine’s hair wild and rock ‘n’ roll, Campbell scrunch-dried her hair and then started curling it on a medium barrel iron from the bottom of her head up. Now, here’s a trick we’ve never heard of (but sounds brilliant!) — he took random sections between the curls, braided them, and ran a flat iron over them to lock in the wave. Shake it out, and you have a fabulous wavy texture to toughen up the curls. To keep it locked in place for the big show, Campbell gave her hair more than one spritz of hairspray (try Spray and Play from BigSexyHair, Katharine’s fave). For tips on Katharine’s smoky, sexy eyes and more, keep reading!

What was the inspiration behind Katharine’s makeup? Says her makeup artist Jake Bailey, “Simply Katherine herself. She is such a natural beauty.” To keep the singer from looking washed out on camera, Jake used a slightly darker foundation on her face, followed by a dusting of Benefit’s Dallas blush which he says “has just the right amount of shimmer to highlight the apples of her cheeks when she flashes her gorgeous smile.” Jake used Prescriptives Liner in Jet on her eys, and to recreate the look, he recommends you “start by lining the inner rim of the eye than work it into the lashes and outside the lash line just a few millimeters.” Blend a little with your finger if you want to make it look smoky. He finished her off with a waterproof lip liner from Styli-Style and Chanel Glossimer in Pagoda. Picture-perfect!

Ummm, I’m not sure who she is, but in this picture she looks sort of like a pug dog… not really a look I’m going for.

It’s so annoying when make-up artists talk about these celebs being “naturally beautiful.” If that’s the case, why did it take Katherine McPhee a ton of time and pounds of super expensive makeup to get ready?

Heather, how do you not know who Katherine McPhee is? Where have you been, WOW!!!

Katharine–she annoys me to no end. She sucked on AI and has yet to have her music out. She is just another wannabee celebrity. And she looks horrible in this picture.

All that work for what. You could do that look in 5 mins w/out a stylist. Blowdry your hair upside down and as for the makeup, Put on heavy black eyeliner and then cut up onions. As you dry your tears smug them off your face. There, took less then 5 mins and didn’t cost a thing. Please bring back the natural look! I’m tired of the “strung out” look, “bo-ho” and the “just got out of bed” look. How about bringing back the natural look?

I started out as a Katharine McFee fan on AI, but she quickly turned me off with her attitude. She wasn’t very genuine. She is a pretty girl, but it takes more than looks to get by in life.

lucky for her, most of hollywood isn’t genuine, so she’ll fit right in. Someone compared her to Catherine Zeta Jones and that is pretty accurate because they both act like
