Jewelry For a Cause: Blood Diamond Bracelets

12/08/2006 at 03:30 PM ET

While promoting their new film Blood Diamond (opening today), the members of the cast, including Jennifer Connelly, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Djimon Hounsou, have been wearing rubber bracelets that say either “Blood Diamond” or “Clean Diamond.” After filming a movie about how so-called “conflict diamonds” financed the brutal civil war in Sierre Leone during the nineties, DiCaprio has sworn off buying diamonds, and Connelly tells PEOPLE that she recently wore Bulgari diamonds recently only “because they are certified not to be conflict diamonds. You can always ask your jeweler if a diamond is certified conflict free or ‘clean’.” The rubber bracelets help raise awareness of the human rights issue connected with diamond mining and are available for only $2 on Amnesty International’s website.

These bracelets are absolutely wonderful! I already own four! It is excellent that people like Djimon Hounsou are working for such an important cause. It is also great that he stars in a movie that will support the end to blood diamonds. I have already seen “Blood Diamond” and I encourage you to do the same. It was completely moving and truly will change your whole outlook. I cannot express my feelings about how great these bracelets are and how thrilled I am that others are learning about the issue. A piece of jewelry can honestly change lives, whether it is in a positive way or a negative way. Help make it a positive way by purchasing a bracelet!

i agree with kay.

i mean, my gosh, if you don’t want to buy them because you think they’re not stylish enough then don’t buy them! .. but if you actually want to put your heart into something and be a supporter then you would buy them no matter what. i mean, what are you expecting them to look like anyway? .. a charm bracelet like everything else? they’re different. they’re meaningful. they’re cheap. what more can you ask for?

Good idea. I like that Lance Armstrong left a mark on the rubber-bracelet fashion world raising cancer awareness. There’s nothing wrong with that though.

I think that asking the people who want your sale whether or not their diamonds are conflict free is half-brained. No diamonds are guarenteed to be conflict free – certification or no.

I am a Director at Amnesty International in Los Angeles. Since these bracelets were announced, we have been swamped with orders. These orders have been coming in from around the US as well as Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. Whether people are buying them to support our work or because they like the film, we at Amnesy are very grateful to the public and to With it’s millions of readers, the message about the bracelets, the film and our work will reach international community.

I think the plastic stretchy braclettes are out-dated…with the words “strength”, “cool”, “happy” on them etc. I do think that this one actually means something. A pin is nice too to wear, but who likes poking their favourite shirts? Maybe these bracelettes just need to made out of other material, something more long-lasting. But I’d buy this one. I like red too.

while i’m a fan of these type of bracelets, i was thinking (call me crazy).. but i think they would be cool made out of wood. of course then people may protest over that, lol. ah well, such is life. i think it would look awesome though.

I just went to see the movie on Saturday. It was the most powerful film I have seen. I am ashamed at how ignorant I was on third world issues. I have three daughters and I want them to be more aware. The torture these children go through to just make it through a day is so profound in the film. The one thing I took away from it, is some people put too much on their items rather than their children. In this movie it showed that nothing meant more to this man than his children. You walk away from the film with an awareness and a message to love your children more than your things. Buy the bracelet and support this cause.

i love the rubber bracelets. i bought 4! if they were made out of wood, more money would go to producing the bracelets instead of going to support the cause.
