Think Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in this week’s PEOPLE, we have rounded up some of our favorite fashionable items to support the cause, including the Polaroid Pink camera, White + Warren cashmere hoodie and adorable Honeydew Rumba shorts to the left. Polaroid Pink digital camera, $150, is donating $60,000 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and launching this pink line of cameras to raise awareness.

White + Warren pink cashmere cable hoddie, $275, Fifty percent of the proceeds will be donated to Women at Risk.

Honeydew Rumba shorts, $16, Nine dollars from each sale of the limited-edition shorts will benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

1. Annick Goutal LA Rose candle, $52, call Saks Fifth Avenue, 877-551-7257, to order. Thirty percent of the proceeds from sales through the month of October will be donated to the American Breast Cancer Foundation.

Companies are increasingly using breast cancer cause marketing to reinforce their brand image and differentiate themselves from their competitors. Navigating the expanding sea of pink ribbon promotions requires consumers to ask a few critical questions:

– How much money from each product sold actually goes toward breast cancer?

– What percentage of the purchase price does this represent?

– What is the maximum amount that will be donated?

– How much money was spent marketing the product?

– To what breast cancer organization does the money go, and what types of programs does it support?

– What is the company doing to assure that its products are not contributing to the breast cancer epidemic?

Far too many marketing campaigns exist for it to be possible to trace the threads of profit for each, and it’s difficult to verify whether or not a promotion is legitimate while you’re standing in the store. Make the best choice you can with the information you have. If you have trouble getting answers or if you feel that a promotion is questionable, write to the company responsible, consider buying a different product, tell your friends.

Thank you for pointing this out, Rebecca. It’s really sickening to me that corporations have found a way to even profit off disease awareness. It’s true you could eat ten Yoplait yogurts, send your lids and yet be donating less than if you just send a breast cancer organization a ten dollar bill. In the end, it’s just a matter of what you’re getting back. However, if shopping is the only motivator for some people, it’s still better than nothing. This is a very worthy cause.

I think the comments by both Maria and Rebecca are extremely intelligent. On the other hand, I’m a sucker for anything in pink, and even if only part of the profits are going for this charity, I’d still prefer that to buying something that gives nothing to such a worthy cause. So thanks for including the pink cashmere hoodie — I think it’s absolutely yummy and I haven’t seen it anywhere else!

my daughter died of breast cancer 11/22/2004. we give all we can to research but i still prefer pink products. i think that all the pink products bring breast cancer to the mind of some who would never otherwise consider supporting our cause and gives an awareness of their own health and taking care of their we can do both, buy and wear pink and give as much as we can to research so no more sweet ladies will suffer with this terrible disease.

The boy shorts are super cute! Unfortunately, when you go to the website to buy them they charge almost $9 for shipping and handling, the same amount that’s getting donated…Are they sold in any stores?

Ahh I love pink so supporting breast cancer is fine by me, I don’t really know anyone who has breast cancer though so I don’t really understand it like some people do.

I like all the products you showed, I’d buy those Honeydew Rumba shorts they’re so cute plus it’s a good price(I am quite the penny pincher).

girls.. i think ya’ll are being ridiculous.. yes we should all be supporting breast cancer.. and yes some people use the pink to benefit themselves…

but the point of it all is… is awareness..

people are noticing it more.. people are getting check ups.. who cares how much of a profit people are getting out of sales.. money is still being donated so help save women..

i think you need to stop focusing on the politics and focus on what really matters and what is being done to help save women..
