Letter Perfect Gift Idea: Initial Necklaces

10/03/2006 at 06:00 PM ET

I don’t know about you, but I always get slammed with birthdays in late September/early October. People born around this time are Libras, an astrological sign known for being quite charming, like Gwyneth, Naomi and Hilary. Which is why I’d bet on them liking one of these tiny Marian Mauer Initial Charm necklaces. I gave one to a friend recently and it was such a hit, it may become my standard present for all significant birthdays (the ones that end in “oh!”). Yes, it’s a bit pricey, $215, but it’s 18k gold and something she’ll treasure forever and wear every day. Don’t you think a tiny “H” would look great on Hilary Duff? That is awfully expensive for a little necklace, no matter how cute it is. You can get similar looking necklaces at Target or Claire’s.

what!!!!! $215.00 for that necklace…you realllly like your friend. Please, advise us on budget-ish fahionesque stuff(thats why we read your blogs)…how many of your readers will spend 215 on our b-days friend???…i love this website but please keep it real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wasn’t this a trend from around 3 years ago?

I can remember this trend about 25 years ago, ouch. When I was ten I had a little J on a chain, and it looked just like that. Time to go dig in my parents’ basement; it must be down there in the boxes of my rejected stuff. I agree though: $215 is too much.

I think the price is ok for an 18K gold necklace. I just got one from fragments.com for myself. It’s SOOOO cute. I don’t want the similar looking from Target for just a bass metal.

This necklace is adorable! The price isn’t too bad considering that it’s 18Kg.

I’ve always wanted one but still can’t afford it. I have a granddaughter now. Want to be able and buy her icecream from the icecream man. Even before this, my daughter would need one first. Very pretty necklace though.

In response to the other posts–I think the initial charms are great BECAUSE trends are cyclical–sure, it may fall out of favor for a while, but it will always come back in fashion–so why not invest in an 18K piece instead of cheap costume jewelry? Gold retains its value, and you’ll be much more likely to wear it five years from now…

It was my bday yesterday AND it ended with an OH! (the big 20) Where’s my initial necklace??

Ugh I can’t stand initial anything..I’m not going to forget what my name is and I really don’t need everyone else to know either.

I’m a little sick of the “omigod, I, like, totally had to buy this 600 purse, and blah blah blah blah blah”.

Yes, I like fashion. Yes, i like pretty things. but i’m not going to spend a fortune keeping up with it.

It doesn’t have to be just “here’s one for 300, here’s a super cheapo thing for $1.99, take your pick” there’s a lot of middle ground, try looking for it, and try helping us find it.

i love the necklaces and the price is not bad at all…215 dollars isnt bad at all…i have a couple necklaces from tiffanys and they are like 500 dollars

I love it(esp since it is yellow gold/ love yellow gold), but I can get this necklace at Ben Moss(Canada) for about $70 in platnium or yellow gold. I got one last x-mas from my aunt with my Initial(A) in platnium(I don’t like platnium so I gave it to my mom who shares the same Initial as I do), but yes they’re really nice and are in style right now big time; I am going to get my Initial in yellow gold when I do purchase mine.

It’s cute, but a little to spendy. Good for you, to the ones who bought it……….Can you say Rip-off. While people in this wold are starving your out there buying $215 neclaces!!!!! How rood!
