Would you wear it? Skinny Jeans

09/06/2006 at 05:46 PM ET

Skinny jeans — just the words alone seem to strike terror into the hearts of many women, but as it says in PEOPLE’s Fall Stylewatch issue, anyone can wear them — honest! Contrary to popular opinion, this look is not just for the waifish and slim of hip/thigh/butt. Within the skinny jeans world, there are a variety of cuts, lengths, and widths of the slim styles that can flatter any body type. And remember, it is all about proportion so consider wearing a longer, looser top with tighter jeans to balance yourself out.

1. If you are more petite, try a cropped style (like the J. Brand jeans, right) that really shows off a hot pair of heels.
2. If you are curvier, try a pair that scrunches around your ankle, which creates the same slimming illusion as a pair of bootcut jeans (see Kate Beckinsale, left).
3. If you want to make your legs look endlessly long, try a long pair of jeans pulled down over super- high heels.
4. If you don’t want to invest in designer options like the celebs, everyone from Target to the Gap is offering the look for less.

Tell us what you think: Do you like skinny jeans? Is this a trend you will try this fall?

I think they have got to be the ugliest jeans on anyone. So unflattering, and they make women look like nasty 80s men. People with big feet look like ogars. Fashion this fall is defintely from the 80s and the 80s were completely awful. Might as well bring big hair back too. Barf!!

Good God no!!! I HATE skinny jeans (or tapered jeans, as someone correctly pointed out). They give me flashbacks of my early middle school days. It is so sad that over the last 10 years or so, designers have been unable to really develop any original trends. Everything is recycled from the past. What’s next? Hammer pants and fluorescents?

I just bought my first pair of Skinny Jeans on Sunday. I was surprised at how great they actually looked on me! I think I’ll get some flats or boots to go over them. Try it out though. They make my bum look great!

Wear what you’re most comfortable in, personally, as a voluptuous, curvy girl, I’ll stick with what looks good on me — bootcut.

No skinny jeans! Tacky! Boot cut is for REAL people!

I saw this style in Europe last year and nearly puked. For tall, bone protruding girls, yes, they look great. For a 4’10, size 4 girl like me, they look awful.

I followed the newest trend in England that SLIGHTLY flare at the ankle. Half skinny, half boot cut. And my friends are dying to know where I got them!

NO WAY! I wore these pants over 15 years ago, while in High School. They looked bad then and worse now!

I might of tried these when I was in my teens. But after 3 kids my body just isn’t the same!!

Skinny jeans are one of the worst things most women can wear- one of the least flattering fashions ever designed. Boot cut jeans balance a (normal) woman’s proportions SO much better. I hope skinny jeans are one fad that dies quickly!
