Would you wear it? Skinny Jeans

09/06/2006 at 05:46 PM ET

Skinny jeans — just the words alone seem to strike terror into the hearts of many women, but as it says in PEOPLE’s Fall Stylewatch issue, anyone can wear them — honest! Contrary to popular opinion, this look is not just for the waifish and slim of hip/thigh/butt. Within the skinny jeans world, there are a variety of cuts, lengths, and widths of the slim styles that can flatter any body type. And remember, it is all about proportion so consider wearing a longer, looser top with tighter jeans to balance yourself out.

1. If you are more petite, try a cropped style (like the J. Brand jeans, right) that really shows off a hot pair of heels.
2. If you are curvier, try a pair that scrunches around your ankle, which creates the same slimming illusion as a pair of bootcut jeans (see Kate Beckinsale, left).
3. If you want to make your legs look endlessly long, try a long pair of jeans pulled down over super- high heels.
4. If you don’t want to invest in designer options like the celebs, everyone from Target to the Gap is offering the look for less.

Tell us what you think: Do you like skinny jeans? Is this a trend you will try this fall?

I am a “mature” woman, size 6, 5 ft 2″ and skinny jeans are NOT for everyone. I consider myself an excellent dresser but I’m sorry, the designers are saying everyone looks good but they don’t. Skrunching makes it look like they don’t fit – too short cuts you off and not everyone can wear spikey heels. If you are skiiny and long legged, go for it – otherwise ones that FIT well in all places, including the length is what works – older women wearing stuff for younger gals – how pitiful – even if it does look good. But then again, money and Hollywood allow anything!

I love the 80’s, but these jeans are gross! I
don’t think they look good on anybody. Yuck!!

I think skinny jeans look ugly on anybody. They make curvy people look fat and slim people look like grasshoppers. I am slim with long legs and I would not wear them even if they paid me to do so.

Skinny jeans look hot on people with skinny fit legs, but look terrible on people with bigger legs.

I think that skinny jeans are amazing! I never thought that i would be able to wear a pair of them, but i was so wrong! They’re not as bad as i thought, they are just slimmer and more fit than normal boot cut jeans. If you find te right pair, they can look good on mostly anyone! Plus, they show off your curves!

OK – I could see wearing them in the 80’s – it wasn’t the worst look of the decade. But unless I want to look like a barbie doll, I will definitely steer clear!

Skinny jeans are a symptom of something that pervades fashion. The fashion world loves boyishly figured women (i suppose its because alot of the designers are gay men?) Karl Lagerfield has been quoted denouncing ‘fat’ people as disgusting. Fashion trends will never start with the well endowed in mind.. a bit sad since boy- women are not the kind of women most men go for anyways!
look at the skinny high waisted pencil skirts that were in last year. While Im not ‘fat’, I do have a butt and hips, I never thought skinny jeans would suit me (I wear only flared jeans) but the ones that bunch at the ankle CAN be worn by non-stick figures.
in any case, trends will fade, so no worries people!
