A Tale Of Two Shoes: How I Survived Emmy Night

08/30/2006 at 10:34 AM ET

My first Emmys and all I can say is thank god I listened to veteran PEOPLE reporter Marisa Laudadio who insisted I bring a pair of ballet slippers with me to the awards!  I was planning to wear my 4 1/2 inch YSL pumps ($495, but bought on sale in Honolulu, but you can check eBay). But when our driver got to the Shrine Auditorium, he realized he didn’t have the right parking pass to get us to the entrance. With only 15 minutes to make it to our seats, our only hope was to sprint OVER A MILE to the theater. So I whipped out the ballet flats (luvmyflats gold leather ballet shoes from Nine West for $49) and started booking down broken sidewalks and Hardee’s parking lots. My Versani 18k gold and diamond earrings ($1,800 loaners—thanks guys!) and my $99 black Andalousy Satellite Paris necklace and $120 Jeanne Nicole lariat were flying everywhere. But thanks to my rubber-soled luvmyflats and my stretch taffeta frock ($410, Nicole Miller), the toughest thing about that mad Emmy dash was trying to breath through fits of hysterical laughter while hauling some serious ass. — Anne Marie Cruz

LOVE those YSL shoes. I’d be so sad to take them off! If I had been there, I’d just be limping around all night. ;)

love, love, love the ballet flats. what did a girl do before they were in fashion?

I’ll admit, I’m a guy and originally from Prague, however, if I was a woman, those shoes would never leave my Czech-side (or my side-check LOL! for a small hockey joke). I am also skeptical that those ballerina feet matches those bags because if they happened to be one perfect fit, it could make your entire trip blessed with symbiosis, like two species who benefit one another without even knowing that! Lovely write up-Allan

Great story, but now I want to see a picture of your whole outfit! Will you post one for all of us to see?

Wow – a BIG change from the clunky black chaka shoes you used to wear at Yale during the grunge days! I’m glad to hear that you’re still in great sprinting shape, and also that you have the discipline to run past the Hardees restaurants!
