Tell us: Will You Wear Cropped Vests?

08/29/2006 at 12:00 PM ET

Some fall trends seem easier to swallow than others– while ankle boots are causing a general panic, cropped vests seem like an easy way to incorporate the fall menswear’s trend into your wardrobe. Sure, they look great on Anne Hathaway (left) and Lucy Liu, but what is the best way for you to work them into your closet? Here are a few of our favorite ways to wear a vest, without looking like one of the boys.

1. Shorter vests look great layered over button down shirts (like Rebecca and Drew‘s) at work or over a tee-shirt to keep it casual on the weekends.

2. Try them with a longer shirt and skinny jeans or keep it fitted on top and pair with wide legged pants, for a Katherine Hepburn look.

3. The one shown here from Old Navy, $27, still seems feminine with all the lace trim.

What do you think? Would you wear a cropped vest? Or do you shy away from menswear styles?

omg !! what a perfect way to start off fall with this cute cropped vest

erika on

i dunno…the vest takes away from ones feminitity, which is something i think should be embraced…

Bunky on

As long as this doesn’t bring the Annie Hall look roaring back. Great film. But the ties are a little much.

Lisa on

I think this vest is wonderful! I own one just like it. It highlight my best features, hugs my curves, and looks polished.

andrea on

i love it…i think it is very cute and does not take away from ones feminity at all.

marianne on

I personally love this look, I bought a dark denim vest last fall and already have the one shown from Old navy…it doesn’t take away one’s femenine side, it accentuates the waist and the breast, if you were ir properly and get the right fit !!!

I think the cropped vest is one of this season’s cutest things! The fact that it is taking something so masculine and making it feminine is amazing. The point, this season, is to get away from the whole flowing girlie vibe and embrace something more structured. To add a comment to the person that said the vest takes away from the female body – how can it do that when it sinches the waist and flows over the top of the hip? It showcases the womanly figure perfectly, while providing a great alternative to the sweater and dress pant rut that we can all fall into.

LOVE IT! I think its a darling new look to try, check out for some really cute looks – the vests look great with ruffled tuxedo shirts under them to keep them nice and girly.

I love the look, I think it looks very classy.

I think this is a style only for the thin and waifish. If you look more like Dolly Parton than Ann Hathaway, short vests are definitely NOT for you!!!

Emily on

Anne looks hot! I don’t know if I could pull this look off though!

Peach on

I kind of agree with Allison, if you’re busty it might be a hard style to wear. Very cute, though.

I think they are okay…but not super crazy about them…

Heather King on

NO. it is so 80s.

Barbara on

No, no, a thousand times no!

Emily on

I hate this look. It is absolutely rediculous. If you want to dress like a man, then just dress like a man. It reminds me of the late 80s, early 90’s. Next thing they’ll be saying we should wear tuxedos……

I actually have that vest from Old Navy, although it’s in a grey color. It looks great over regular t-shirts, polos, and stuff.

I daring outfit look that I created was you wear a plain white or grey t-shirt under a vest, then pair that with cloth plaid shorts, try the pair at Old Navy, and you can layer ankle length leggings, or opaque grey or black tights under the shorts, and wear ankle boots or pumps.

It’s a femanine way to wear the hip menswear look.

Of course it’s 80s but fashion always comes back in. Where do you think skinny jeans came from? Everyone will be wearing these.

Bree on

No Way! This look is absolutley hideous!!!

diane♥ on

i love the look!

Margaux on

I HATE this look. You couldn’t pay me to wear it. It reminds me of the vests we wore in 7th grade back in the early 90’s. ICK. Must they bring back every style from the past? Some things are better left forgotten about (including leggings and those unflattering skinny jeans).

Britt on

I like it…I think it’s tres sexy!!

Mary on

I agree with Margaux. This look is absolutely hideous! Vests, skinny jeans, and leggings? No thank you! I am proud to say that I will be out of style this season. Being out of style will look better then wearing clothing from the early 90s. It is my humble opinion, that we need to leave this crap in the 90s. YUK!

karrie on

No. And I will not wear leggings with skirts or with gigantic shirts belted over them either. Too many eighth grade flashbacks for me.

Megan on

As a mother of two who just had the second one three months ago, there’s a snowball’s chance I’d ever wear something like this! Ugh, all I need is something to make me still look pregnant! (Although I do get a kick out of people’s faces when they ask me when I’m due and I tell them he’s three months old!)

Emily on

I, like anyone else with classic fashion sense, will not be wearing cropped vests this fall…..No matter what modern twist they put on them they still look dated.

chopsueyluey on

Um, no. I would get made fun of at my job, they’d be wondering if I was trying to be ‘one of the guys’…..

sharon on

I would not wear that at all. She must have forgotten what size she is. She looks terrible in that and a mess

sharon on

She looks terrible in that and very messy. looks like she forgot what size she wears.

snowcapsdean on

Time warp… put it back!!!

I like how it looks looks greate but is not for me

Nikki on

No way, I would never wear a vest like that! I remember wearing that back in the 7th grade why would I want to wear something that I hated to wear back then now!

Karin on

Love those vests! I have had cute one in dark grey wool with soft pinstripes that’s got a nice tight fit sitting in my closet for the last 8 years or so. I guess it was a good idea to keep it ;-). By the way – I already saw girls wearing those in London last spring and since I found the perfect victoriana-blouse to go with it there as well, this piece has had a heavy revival since then. The blouse is about hip-length, with small slightly puffy sleeves, and I love to wear that and the vest with very skinny jeans and ballerina flats.

Mirjam on

Lovely! – but only on average-sized women (bust-wise). I am quite busty and they look ridiculous on me :(( Also, I think they make small-sized women (again, bust-wise) look very masculine.

Marguerite on

I think vests are fantastic, and I already own a couple. For those who think that its not very feminine, well, its not, nor should it be. Fashion is heading into an androgynous/menswear period. Suspenders are even a trend this fall. Expect to see all the aforementioned items, as well as trousers, argyle, sweaters, turtlenecks, button-downs, plaid, tweed, and grunge.

Denise* on

That vest is UGLY!!! She can wear it, but I wouldnt be caught dead in it!!!

Savannah on

i like it. i have one… but to each her own.

if you guys dont like it just say so, leave out the meanness, dissing and frustration. just take it out on your husbands when they get home (if you have one)

Savannah on

to emily who thinks people magazine tells her what to wear like “absolutely ridicolous vests” and soon “tuxedos”, remember you have free will. you can wear whatever you want sweetie.

Rae on

I think it’s Hot!!!!!, Although It’s not my style, however I think it looks good on her.

Crystal A. Bennett on

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! I am a 80’s baby and I am not going back to elementary and middle school! I get so tired of trends from the eighties coming back..hince..leggings, vests, suspenders and skinny jeans. People are such soon as someone famous wears it..oh then it must be back in style. Give me a break..come up with something new and I will think about wearing it.
