Trend Worth Trying: Dark Nail Polish

08/15/2006 at 06:00 AM ET

Remember when Chanel debuted its coveted Vamp nail polish in 1994? The rich, velvety shade– so rock-star sexy!– finally convinced me, a neutral-polish gal, to dip my fingers into the dark side of polish. And it seemed women everywhere fell for a rainbow of velvety shades, too. Well, black and its dark sisters (plum, raspberry to burgundy) are baaack! We’ve already spotted Heidi Klum, Mischa Barton (left) and Jessica Simpson (right) flashing darkly-colored manicured fingertips, which the fashion bibles say will be hot, hot, hot against fall’s rich color palette. No surprise, Chanel’s limited-edition summer shade Black Satin is already sold out, but I’m loving their Rouge Noir hue, $17, and OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark (Lindsay Lohan is reportedly a fan), $7.50, both of which offer plenty of dark, sexy attitude. — Julia Wang

I’ve been painting my nails dark for years – black is the new pink – and I just LOVE the look. Its so sexy and mysterious and people can’t help but look at your beautiful hands!

I LOVE the dark nail polish trend. I remember wearing it when I was younger and the rocker bands were in. I will definately be one of the followers, and wear the dark shades of nail polish! :)

Yes. Dark nails are sexy and at the same time very elegant and mistirioous. I also like but bright nails but i dont i dont have a problem with dark nails.

It definitely takes a short, well groomed nail to pull this look off gracefully. Personally, it makes me flash back to my days as a 13 year old goth, so I’ll pass.

What’s so great about this color is that it goes wiyh everything.Being 16 I think it’s to stop with the crazy multicolored polish

I like this look but I don’t think I could pull it off in the corporate world. Anything too dark or too bright just isn’t appropriate- maybe I’ll try it on the weekend though.

i’ve already started wearing a “black cherry” (dark polish is a trend i will love to follow!) and can’t get enough. and Alicia- it’s a perfect amount of edge to any corporate (or not) attire. i happen to know :) …try it!

I’d love to try it but my polish always chips. Anybody know of a polish that lasts even through bathing kids and doing dishes?

Jessie on

Sorry Megan, but from an esthetician’s point of view.. all polish chips!! Chanel has a beautiful new black on the market now though.. Although if that is out of anyone’s price range, the average drugstore polish will do.. The biggest trick is to add a topcoat every other day.. the surefire way to prevent chips, no matter what the quality of the polish is!
