Lets Discuss: What's Your Summer Hair Secrets?

08/11/2006 at 12:13 PM ET

Come mid-August, most of us are sick of fighting the heat and humidity in the battle to tame our hair. Here’s how a few of us are coping, but we want to know: How are YOU dealing with your summer hair woes?

Kara M. Says:
Wrangling my it’s-always-frizzy-no-matter-how-much-mousse-I-use summertime hair is a constant battle. I’m always looking for timesavers and frizz tamers. My current solution? Scarf headbands like the ones you can buy online at Intuition. It’s a scarf and headband in one – with a piece of elastic at the back – which means no slipping, no re-tying, and no knotted strands of hair. And for me, that means an instantly chic hairdo with the least amount of effort (a bit like Jessica Simpson and Nicole Richie, left). Voila!

Amy K. says:
I am just looking for anything that cuts down on time and effort spent on my hair. Headbands — multi-colored, really wide or super skinny, with a bow or shiny patent leather — are the perfect accessory to jazz up a pony tail and bangs or a messy bun. I love a hairstyle that requires so little skill. Here are some of my picks, I am especially obsessed with these Cara Couture Mini Bamboo Headbands (Gotta love the little bamboo accent, very Gucci-esque) for a perfect quick fix!

Melissa L-G. says:
No headbands for me — I decided to cut off 7 inches of my hair to beat the heat! Now, it’s all about scrunch-n-go for me in the morning. The first step is a healthy dose of Bumble and Bumble Grooming Creme, which makes me frizz-free. And then on to the Frederic Fekkai Wave Spray, which makes my sort of wavy here transform into Kate Hudson-like ripples (after much scrunching!). If I want a messier look, I turn to Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray and a little bit of Kerastase Vinyle Nutri-Sculpt to flip out the ends. Less than 5 minutes in the morning takes care of my hair all day long.

I love Nicole! She single- handedly brought back the headscarf trend. She looks so adorable. Jessica looks horrible as usual.

Monique on

Love the idea however, I’m very picky when it comes to heavy prints of any kind. No heavy prints for me unfortunetaly. In this case I prefer Nicole’s to Jessica’s ;-)

lenora on

I think it is a nice look. It started with Jackie O.

Hannah on

i like this look, except Jessica’s looks horrible. Nicole’s looks good though.

What I am doing everyday now is the “curl and twist”. It takes no more than 10 minutes and looks natural and pretty. It reminds me of Jessica Simpson’s hair sometimes. All you do is take pieces of your hair, big or small pieces and spiral curl them. As soon as you let go of the strand with the curling iron, you twist that strand the same way it was curled. You leave all the strands twisted tight until you are all done. Spray some hair spray and use some piecy product and just brush your hair out with your fingers. I promise, this look is easy and looks amazing!

Nicole’s headscarf seems to be part of the overall trend in which, as her body shrinks, her accessories get bigger. Soon she will be only a scarf and big eyeglasses. And then she will start fires everywhere.

Ashlee on

I’m sorry, but I think both of them look gorgeous… Jess has always been this cute little girl/woman, and she looks amazing with the headband. Nicole looks good also, but I def prefer Jess’ look.

I really like Nicole’s look but i really think Jessica looks like an old lady which is a big change from her normally prissy look!I like ponytales with a spicy look for summer!Put it with big shades and u can’t go wrong!

I LOVE headbands! I live in Florida and it is really pointless spening alot of time on a cute hairstyle when as soon as i go out it’s 98 degrees AND raining…ugh! So a headband can be your bestfriend. It takes not time and it always looks cute. I like both Nicloe and Jess’s but I like when Jessica wears her Black Headband. It looks nice with her blond hair. It’s fun to wear them in all different ways and all different sizes, colors, texures with bang without bangs………their GREAT!

I love this trend…however ladies – some of you anyways – this blog is for OUR trends, not stating how the two girls look! I have shorter flippy-outy hair that HATES humidity. My summer tip is to blow dry your hair upside down – adds instant “poof” and volume to any style and type of hair! Also – drying your hair upside down is quicker, don’t know why, but it is!

I’m totally loving the hair scarves at http://www.skyegreen.com. They come in totally funky fabrics and great sizes so they’re perfect for the bandanna look or as headbands. They’re not that expensive either and they have pretty details like sequins or applique flowers.

jessica looks like a milk maid. On the other hand, nicole looks like a funny little animal that you dress up with your big sunglasses and huge hair scarf so that the picture you take, comes out really funny and cute.

rebecca on

what is your problem ellie???? jessica is gorgeous and so is nicole. nicole’s scarf may be nicer, but jessica’s isn’t so bad either. LOVE U JESS!!!

well ladies, i dont know about you but when you are as gorgeous as me you dont need all these accesories like big sunglasses or scarfes, because it would hide my BEAUTIFUL face and eyes. and we wouldnt want that, would we?

They both look really beautiful, ageless portraits.

This look is great to hide a bad hair, but let’s be honest, “me myself and I”, Nicole and Jessica, don’t really need to hide anything, do they? They are gorgeous…this look is great for the weekend. It’s really chic and cool and VERY in at the moment. They both look great…wish everyone could give this look as much justice!

With me I have really long hair. All the way to my butt almost. What I do is get a trim every other month. After I get out of the shower I will usually put my hair in a loose type bun and get some chopsticks and put them in thru each side. Then Im out the door. If I have the time I will straighten my hair usually a flat iron and then put in a pony tail.

Some times i will put my hair in a messy bun at the nape of my neck. THats mostly what I do. Its cute and simple and easy to do.

EmO giRl on

I think this style looks great on nicole!Jessica looks horrible in everything!this trend is great!

Jen on

I definitely agree with kayleene on the messy bun. Not only is it fashoinable, but it is efficient when you have long, wavy hair to have an updo that is quick and easy like that bun. It also helps that your hair doesn’t have to be completely dry when you put it up- and when my hair dries, I take it out of the bun, which turns my normally blah wavy hair into beautiful curly hair!

Teresa on

I love both, Jessica is so pretty that everything looks amazing to her!

Carol on

I love the hair thingy but i hate it on Jessica Simpson she just looks like she just woke up now nd she coudnt take a shower soo she just putting a thing to cover her hair i like how nicoles is she does it good !

Sophia on

i have almost exact the same hair style as Nicole except my hair now is brown and with highlight.i watched the simple life show on dvd again the other day,and i just love love love Paris and Nicole’s style of course i am not gonna copy everything they wear or do though.

maria gonzales on

It’s not a fashion statement if you wear it like everyday such as Nicole.

ar on

Well “rosanna” not everyone likes reading about people who are full of themselves. This Blog is about expressing how you LIKE the tred not how it covers your “beautiful face and eyes” please stop looking in the mirror.

Charla on

Please “rosanna” get over yourself the trend is AWSOME.

Thank you Emily, Andrea, Annie Oakley, Kayleene and Jen! Those are great tips. We didn’t mean to distract the rest of you with pictures of Jessica and Nicole — we want to hear about YOUR hair… not just theirs!

Lindsey on

Thank you editors!!
My summer tip is similar to some of the others; I prefer to not dry my hair completely if its just going to frizz in the humiditity; so I put in leave in conditioning creme (Garnier Fructise is awesome)and do the messy bun thing until dry and then let it loose. The leave in conditioner helps give my thick hair something to hold a shape with, without having product over load.

Aria on

Hi girls! Well, i live in Malibu and as many of you know it can get very humid. I hate it because i have very fine but long hair. It always end up frizzing. What i usually love to do is flaten it with a straghtening iron, put it in a low ponytail and then wear some sort of hat or cap with a pair of designer eyewear. It always looks awsome AND it can be a casual look or something more dressier..depends what u wear with it.

Lisa Cato on

I love the look, I of course never tried it. But I would like to!

Elle on

when I get out of the shower I put lotion on. then the excess on my hands, I run through my hair. it makes it silky and shiny.

i dont like jess’s look at all! however, i happen to love nicole’s! does anyone have any tips for thick wavy hair?

dee on

Put baby oil in your hair as your straightening it or just before its done air drying. leave hand lotion in it…use vaseline to make it easier to straighten –blow dry, especially if u have coarse hair. for curly coarse hair, if u wanna leave it curly, add everything like moose, gel, and conditioner(wheich u leave in),add it all when your hair is wet, then jsut wrap it with a towel, before it gets damp, add baby oil–a LITTLE, and a LITTLE vaseline. put a hat on your head for about 5min until it settles downa bit, then take the hat off….good luck.

kathe on

i know this is totally off topic BUT its still about accesories. DOES ANYONE KNOW NICOLE RICHIES SHADES? coz i really really like it.
thanks so much. would apreciate it if i got a reply (:
have a nice day everyone.
