Ask The Experts: Beyonce's Hair Stylist Gives Us Tips

07/26/2006 at 03:42 PM ET

With her hectic summer record-promo tour, Beyonce is one busy superstar this summer, and her hair stylist Kimberly Kimble is in charge of keeping her hair looking fresh. We asked her to answer a few of your burning summer hair questions.

So how do you keep Beyonce’s hair looking wild and free, but not too crazy?

KIMBLE: Everything starts at the base– how you shampoo and condition the hair. Then, think about how you are going to blow dry and lay in the curls. I use different techniques when I blow dry. If the hair is going to end up full, you don’t want to straighten it too much, so try to leave some of the texture in. If you’re going for a straight style, of course, you have to straighten it with a flat iron to get it bone straight from the root to the ends. You need to put product in the hair that’s going to keep it shiny, silky and smooth and protect it from the heat.

What’s the deal with hairspray? If you use too much, the hair is hard and nasty, but if you don’t use enough, your curls won’t stay.

KIMBLE: Well, that’s the thing. In my line, I have a very light holding spray. It’s not too sticky, and you have to build on it to make it what you want it. It starts off with a light to medium hold, and you don’t have to have it super hard to make it lock in the curl. But you have to use the right curling iron, and the right technique to get the hair to curl right. It’s never just about the products, and that’s what most people don’t get.

How can you keep summer hair looking healthy?
KIMBLE: Summertime is always a great time for carefree hairstyles. You have to keep it well moisturized. If you also dye your hair, it’s a great time to boost the color. I usually take all my clients a little lighter in the summer, but you should use color-enhancing shampoos to keep the color rich. Look for products with sunscreen it and make sure to get a good color-treated shampoo and conditioner to help keep your color vibrant for the summer. Hair has the appearance of healthiness when the color is rich. The two I love are John Frieda’s shampoo and conditioner and Aveda’s line for color-treated hair. — Amy Keith

When you’re in the industry (acting, dacing, singing, etc.), and you’re an African American woman, your hair is styled constantly. The reason most of them wear extensions is not only for versatility, but mainly to protect their natural hair from the damage that occurs from styling (heat, processing, washing). Sometimes, even when they want to wear their own hair, it’s more sensible to wear extensions.

Yall some hatas. Beyonce is the baddest female in the industry right now and dont yall forget that. Give her her props yeah her hair may be short but her money long. Now thats a good look. Chow!

What tpe of hair does Kim Kimble use to style Beyonce’s hair with? There are a lot of websites that advertise “premium” or “quality” hair, but even in the pictures of the hair they sell, you can tell that the hair doesn’t even move like the hair Beyonce wears in her videos. A lot of sites advertise that they are the best, however I find their claims “questionable”. I’ve even received samples of hair the was HORRIBLE. If anyone can point me in the direction of light, free flowing, non-tangling hair (think Beyonce in the “Irreplacable” Video), I’d GREATLY appreciate it! Nik (

I swear, Kim and Daniela, you are both true to the bone HATERS. The woman is beautiful naturally. Weave or no weave, she’s attractive. You should learn to handle your insecurities about your own faults a bit better as opposed to blastin someone else unjustly. And like the other comment said, if you don’t want your hair like hers then don’t read the article…..duh.

ANYWAY, I love Beyonce’s look and attitude. She carries herself very well.

her hair is lovely no matter if its a weave or not. All i wanna know is what her secret is and her stylist is totally not letting us in. Shampoo and condition great tip-never heard that before!

Beyonce wears Extensions Plus hair – at least some of the time including in the movies Fighting Temptations and Dreamgirls. They have the extensions and also do the custom made wigs.

Yes, there are some major haters, and what kills me is that not one person mentioned all the white stars that have more extensions than the blacks nowa days, but it’s considered real because they are white, PLEASE! Beyonce’s hair is stacked and quit hating just because you can’t do it. Females need to do more appreciating and less hating.
